What is The Williams-Morgan Piano Competition?

It is a piano competition, WMPC, in two classes for all able pianists who by the date of the competition have not made a commercial recording. If you are under 18 years on the 30 November immediately before the competition, you enter Class 'A' or, Class 'B' for those over 18 years. All will play a set piece of music before adjudicators.

Entries are welcome from any country, but must be in writing by completing an Entry Form, which you can download now or by contacting RWM Music

Entry to the WMPC is free and the competition rules come with the Entry Form. You need to purchase only the set music, which has a free CD of the composer playing that music. Incidentally, the set music books should contain an Entry Form and rules, whether you obtain it by download or mail order.

How long is the set music?

The set music changes from one competition to another, so the approximate performance time for the music varies. It would be unlikely to be less that twenty minutes but could be double that.

Can I bring my friends and family?

Please do. When you send you Entry Form, make a note of whether you might bring one, two, or more people with you, that information will help for seating arrangements.

What is the Preliminary Eliminating Stage (PES)?

The 'PES' overcomes unnecessary travel for entrants, particularly those of you in other countries. You can enjoy participating in the WMPC from, any country and anywhere in the UK.

Through 'PES' the focus becomes, preparation of your work for the WMPC, without the worry of planning travel and time away from what you do normally.

Because the WMPC uses set music, entrants will need all their concentration to search for their unique interpretation of it. That will be their challenge. The good news is that each has the same opportunity to first listen to the CD with the composer playing his ideas. What will be your interpretation?

When you think you have done your best, record your performance on cassette tape or other. Then, send it to WMPC to arrive not later than sixty calendar days before the date of the competition. Incidently, do not worry about the quality of recording, only the quality of your work.

The nominated parts of the set music - to record - for the 'PES' are:
Class 'A' Views From This Side
Class 'B' Alpine Symphony - First and Second Movement

What should I know about the WMPC Finalist Concert?

After the WMPC all can relax and join in the finalist concert, so you will need to prepare some additional music. Your choice should cover an approximate performance time of 15 to 25 minutes and can be either, one, or a collection of shorter works. In the concert you will play the set music again, followed by your choice. There will be a recording of the concert and in the weeks that follow, you will receive a CD of your performance.
